Abstract
Introduction: Mandibular fractures are the most common maxillofacial fracture with various fixation modalities. One of these modalities is the use lag screw and Herbert cannulated bone screw. Objectives: Comparison of the clinical and radiographic performance of Herbert bone screw (HBS) with conventional lag screws in anterior mandibular fracture. Materials and methods: Two groups each including 6 patients were treated using Herbert bone screw, and the other group using lag screw. Clinical follow up was conducted after 24-hours, one, four, six and twelve weeks. In addition, a radiographic investigation was performed after twelve weeks to estimate the mean bone density across the fracture line. Result: By the end of the follow up period, all cases in both groups showed absence of intra-fragmentary mobility, normal lower lip sensation, normal occlusal, a statistically significant decrease in pain intensity score (p value
