Abstract

Introduction: Local application of antibiotic drugs has better clinical results together with scaling and root planning. Many locally delivered chemotherapeutic agents are available such as tetracycline fibers chlorohexidine chips and doxycycline gel. Nowadays a local antimicrobial treatment for periodontal infection has been established by using a formula of NTZ gel applied to the periodontal pocket.
Aim of the work: The present study is established to study and compare the effectiveness of local application of nitazoxanide (NTZ) gel combined with scaling and root planning in the management of moderate periodontal infection.
Materials and Methods: A randomized, controlled clinical trial was performed, a whole number of forty patients, in two groups with moderate periodontal infection. They were subdivided into group (1) which comprised twenty patients received scaling and root planning (SRP) only which served as a control negative group and group (2) which comprised twenty patients treated with scaling and root planning (SRP) and local delivered sustained release NTZ gel which served as study group. Clinical parameters measured were pocket depth, clinical attachment level (CAL), modified gingival index and bleeding index, they were assessed on day 0 and after 3and 6 months.
Results: The two groups showed marked reduction in all clinical measurements after six months. However the NTZ gel group has better outcomes than control group.
Conclusion: Topical use of NTZ gel in adjunction to SRP proved to be successful in the management of moderate periodontitis offered superior results when compared to SRP alone.
